Madame Bovary

Madame Flaubert was originally published in 1856, the debut novel of Gustave Flaubert. After a court case made it notorious it became a best seller and launched Flaubert's career as a writer.

This book has marbled covers with a soft leather spine. The title and author are stamped on the spine with embossed gilt lettering. The back cover has a small mark where some of the marble cover has been scraped off, the mark is approximately 2.5cm long and 1 cm high. The corners of the of covers are lightly frayed, as are the edges of the leather cover on the spine.

Inside the book the inside front and back covers are also marbled paper. The inside page also has a small envelope stuck to it with the address "Miss R. Pugh, 6 Sussex Mansion, Sussex Place, London." (The handwriting is hard to read so it looks like Surrey or Sussex, but Googling suggests that Sussex Place was located near Regents Park, I can't find any reference to a Surrey Place).

Inside the note is a small card stamped with the name "Mademoiselle Manileve" and a note in French signed by "Lily". Mademoiselle Manileve may have been a French finishing school so Lily may have been a schoolmate or perhaps teacher of "Miss Pugh".

Inside the book the spine is in good condition with little evidence of cracking. There are foxing marks on some pages throughout the book but no serious damage can be seen. There are multiple colour illustrations throughout and it appears they are all present and correct.

Overall this book is in good condition and should last for many more years with a bit of careful handling.
