King Edward III is considered to be one of England's greatest medieval monarchs. After a wobbly start, he ruled over a country that was surprisingly united - primarily because he united them over their dislike of the French.

His claim to the French throne led to the start of what would become the Hundred Years War. And the number of living sons he had by his wife, Philippa of Hainault, led to a series of competing claims to the throne that led to the Wars of the Roses.
